Ahmedabad identifies 33 accident blackspots as road fatalities continue to rise

Ahmedabad has identified 33 road accident blackspots as concerns grow over the rising number of fatal crashes across the city. Overspeeding, mobile phone use while driving, wrong-side driving and inadequate road infrastructure have emerged as major contributors to the increasing accident rate.

According to details revealed in an audit conducted by the Gujarat Road Safety Authority, several locations in Ahmedabad have witnessed a high number of fatal accidents since 2021. Among them, Naroda Patiya has emerged as the most dangerous stretch, recording 20 accidents that resulted in 14 deaths.

The audit found recurring patterns in accident-prone areas such as Shantipura crossroads, Naroda Patiya, Iskcon road and Juna Vadaj circle. Officials noted that narrow roads shared by heavy vehicles and pedestrians have been a common factor behind many of the crashes.

Road safety experts have also pointed to infrastructure-related issues linked to public transport projects. At Rabari Colony Crossroads, reflective sheets have reportedly not been installed on Metro pillars, increasing the risk of accidents, especially during low-visibility conditions.

Experts have recommended improved reflective markings near zebra crossings and stop lines to enhance road safety. Meanwhile, Vakil Saheb Bridge in Bopal has also witnessed a steady rise in accidents, with 14 serious crashes recorded at the location.

Among the identified hotspots, Odhav Ring Road BRTS Stand recorded 30 accidents and 13 fatalities, while Juna Vadaj Circle witnessed 15 accidents resulting in 11 deaths. Other major blackspots include YMCA Club, Pakwan Junction, Naroda Patiya and Thakkarbapanagar Approach.
