Ahmedabad embarks on mega urban infrastructure overhaul with iconic roads, metro-linked corridors

The Amdavad Municipal Corporation has launched an ambitious urban infrastructure transformation plan involving more than 50 kilometres of precinct development, iconic roads, model roads and east-west connectivity corridors aimed at reshaping the city’s urban landscape.
The civic body on Tuesday said the large-scale projects are intended to create a modern, sustainable and people-friendly road network while improving mobility, public spaces and urban aesthetics across Ahmedabad.
According to AMC officials, the projects are centred on metro connectivity, sports-themed urban corridors, iconic road development and integrated transport infrastructure that would give Ahmedabad a renewed urban identity.
Precinct development projects
AMC has planned precinct development works spanning 10.60 kilometres across different parts of the city at an estimated cost of ₹334.38 crore, for which tenders have already been approved and work is currently in progress.
The projects include a 3.40-km metro-route precinct from Thaltej Crossroads to Helmet Circle and onwards to Vijay Crossroads; a 4.20-km sports-themed precinct from Chimanbhai Flyover AEC Crossroads to Motera Crossroads, extending up to the Narendra Modi Stadium and Vishwakarma Metro Station; a 1.70-km educational and knowledge society precinct connecting Vijay Crossroads, the old passport office area and Commerce Six Roads; and a 1.30-km connectivity corridor linking Ashram Road with western riverfront entry points.
The riverfront connectivity stretch includes entry points at New Vadaj, Usmanpura, Usmanpura Garden, Bata Junction, Vallabhsadan and Ellisbridge.
Officials said the precinct developments would feature wider carriageways, pedestrian-friendly footpaths, cycling tracks, drop-off and pick-up zones, auto-rickshaw stands, shared public seating spaces, multi-utility zones and advanced signage systems.
The projects will also include landscaping, tree plantation, sports-themed sculptures, children’s play areas, themed seating arrangements and art installations highlighting the city’s sporting achievements.
Law Garden precinct project
Separately, a 6.60-km Law Garden precinct development project worth ₹99.90 crore is also under progress.
The project covers NCC Chowk to Subhadrapur Junction Road, Mount Carmel High School to Jalaram Underpass Road, GICEA to Panchvati Circle Road, Mithakhali Crossroads to Wagh Bakri Tea Lounge, Mount Carmel High School to Commerce Six Roads, and Shrivirchand Raghavji Gandhi Chowk to Mithakhali Circle Road.
Under this project, AMC plans to create organised parking spaces, plantation-lined walkways, modern footpaths, vending zones, benches, traffic signage, thermoplastic road markings, integrated landscape lighting and new light poles.
Iconic roads project
AMC is also executing large-scale works under its Iconic Roads Project.
The civic body said six roads with a combined length of around 18 kilometres are currently being developed, including the Pakwan Junction-Iskcon Junction Road, Naroda Muktidham-Dehgam Junction Road, Vist Circle-Tapovan Circle Road, Ashram Road from Paldi to Wadaj Circle, Vist Circle-Zundal Circle Road and the Kenyug Crossroads-Shyamal Crossroads-SG Highway stretch.
In addition, two more iconic road projects spanning nearly 6 kilometres — from Pakwan Junction to Mansi Circle and Keshavbag Junction, and from the airport to Dafnala Junction — are also being planned.
AMC said tenders worth ₹405.23 crore and ₹79.78 crore have been approved for these projects.
The iconic roads are expected to include modern urban amenities such as landscaped footpaths, sculptures, fountains, walking and jogging tracks, cycling tracks, green buffer zones, parking facilities and multifunctional public spaces.
Further development plans are also under consideration for roads connecting Kotarpur to the Toyota showroom stretch, YMCA to SP Ring Road, Sanand Circle to Shantipura Circle, Iskcon Junction to Vakil Bridge and Gandhi Ashram to Chimanbhai Bridge.
Model roads and east-west corridor
Under the Model Road Project, AMC has proposed redevelopment of several key stretches, including Kesar Vatika Bansari Circle to Ring Road, TP-411 Nana Chiloda to Karai Ring Road, Kesar Circle to National Handloom Road, Soni ni Chali to Odhav Fire Station and SP Ring Road, Jadeshwar Crossroads to SP Ring Road, Chanakyapuri to Ranna Park, and the Prahladnagar Fire Station-SG Highway stretch in Sarkhej ward.
The tendering process for these projects is currently underway.
Meanwhile, the Roads Project Department has also initiated plans for a 10.23-km East-West Corridor Development project connecting Ognaj Circle to Dadhichi Bridge via the Gota-Akhbarnagar Road corridor. Tender procedures for the project are in progress.
AMC officials said that once completed, the projects are expected to ease traffic movement, improve pedestrian and cyclist safety and significantly enhance the city’s urban infrastructure and public spaces.
