Jewellery valued at ₹1.15 lakh was allegedly stolen from a flat in Maninagar after two boys reportedly entered the house through an open door late at night. The Maninagar police have registered a case of house break-in following a complaint filed by 35-year-old Jay Modi, a resident of Maninagar.

As per the FIR, the complainant, who works as a branch manager with a financial firm near Shivranjani Crossroads, was out-of-town assignment on the morning of November 17. During his travels, his wife stayed at her parental home in Kankaria.

Modi stated that he returned on November 24 and was at home around 3.30 pm when a team from the Ahmedabad Crime Branch arrived and informed him that a theft had taken place at his residence. Officers told him that they had already apprehended one of the suspects along with the stolen ornaments.

Crime Branch alerts homeowner, brings suspect to residence

Police brought a 12-year-old boy to the complainant’s flat and questioned him in Modi’s presence. The minor is a resident of Rabarivas near Hirabhai Tower in Maninagar. He reportedly confessed that on November 20 around 11 pm, he and his minor friend, also a resident of Rabarivas, entered Modi’s home through the main door, which had been left open.

The duo allegedly went straight to the bedroom, opened the iron safe and stole gold ornaments belonging to Modi’s mother.

Stolen ornaments recovered

After being informed by the Crime Branch, Modi and his family checked the iron safe inside the parents’ bedroom and discovered the jewellery missing. The stolen items included:

* A white-diamond gold ring weighing 3 grams, worth ₹30,000

* A red-and-green gold ring weighing 3 grams, worth ₹30,000

* A black-beaded gold mangalsutra weighing 15.900 grams, worth ₹55,000

The total value of the stolen property amounts to ₹1.15 lakh, according to the FIR.

Entry through unlocked main door

The complainant told police that the suspects had taken advantage of the unlocked main door. The house was unattended at the time of the incident, making the break-in easy for the two boys, who allegedly acted together.

Case registered, probe on

Based on the confession and recovery of the stolen property, Maninagar police have registered a case of theft under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police said the involvement of two minors is a key factor and procedures will follow the Juvenile Justice Act.

Investigators are recording statements of the complainant’s wife, parents and other witnesses. Further inquiry is underway to trace the second boy and verify whether the pair were involved in similar thefts in the neighbourhood.
