The Ahmedabad Crime Branch on Tuesday evening arrested a 49-year-old man from the Fatehwadi area after he was allegedly found carrying a country-made pistol without any permit.

The Crime Branch team was patrolling the Vyaspur Canal stretch near the Vejalpur Metro Depot around 6 pm. During the patrol, officials received a tip-off from a personal informant that a man dressed in a white robe and trousers, wearing a khaki jacket, was walking from Fatehwadi towards Danilimda and was allegedly in possession of an illegal firearm.

Acting on the information, the team immediately reached the spot. A short while later, the police spotted a man matching the informant’s description. When stopped and questioned, he was identified as Abdul Washid alias Avadan Abdul Aziz Qureshi, a resident of Fatehwadi and originally from Balrampur district in Uttar Pradesh.

During the search police recovered a country-made iron pistol from the right pocket of Qureshi’s jacket. The weapon had a 14 cm barrel, a black fibre grip wrapped with black tape, and no identifiable markings. It was valued at ₹15,000.

The pistol was found unloaded, and Qureshi allegedly failed to produce any licence, permit or documentary proof authorising possession of the firearm. On questioning, he allegedly told police that he had procured the pistol in Uttar Pradesh many years ago but could not recall the name or address of the person who sold it to him.

Qureshi was arrested around 7.45 pm, and a case has been registered under Section of the Arms Act and Section of the Gujarat Police Act at the Vejalpur Police Station. Further investigation is under way.
