The Ahmedabad Crime Branch has arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly impersonating a police officer and cheating a job aspirant of over ₹1.21 lakh by promising him a constable’s post in the police department, officials said on Tuesday.
The accused, identified as Ajitsinh alias Ranjitsinh Thakor, a resident of Siddhpur town in Patan district, was posing as a serving police personnel and allegedly used the false identity to gain the trust of the complainant. Police said the accused convinced the victim that he could secure him a government job as a police constable in return for money.
According to the Crime Branch, the complainant paid a total of ₹1.21 lakh to the accused at different stages. Following a tip-off and subsequent verification, a Crime Branch team traced and apprehended Thakor. During the arrest, police recovered ₹50,000 in cash and a mobile phone valued at ₹5,000, taking the total value of seized articles to ₹55,000.
A case has been registered at Saraswati Police Station in Patan under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to cheating, impersonation and forgery. After preliminary interrogation, the accused was handed over to the Saraswati Police Station for further investigation.
Police records indicate that Thakor has a prior criminal history, with an earlier case registered against him at Jadar Police Station in Sabarkantha district under sections of the BNS Act.
Senior Crime Branch officials said further investigation is under way to ascertain whether the accused targeted more victims using similar methods. The police have urged citizens, particularly job seekers, to verify credentials and avoid falling prey to individuals claiming to offer government jobs in exchange for money.
