Ahmedabad CP Gyanendera Singh Malik appointed Gujarat DGP

In a significant development in Gujarat's police administration, the state government on Saturday appointed Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Gyanendera Singh Malik as the new Director General and Inspector General of Police (DGP) of Gujarat with immediate effect.

According to a notification issued by the Home Department, Government of Gujarat, Malik, a 1993-batch IPS officer, has been appointed to the vacant cadre post of Director General and Inspector General of Police, Gujarat State, in the Apex Scale Level-17 of the pay matrix.

Malik has been serving as the Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad City, and has led several major law-and-order and security operations in the state's largest city. His appointment to the top police post comes nearly six months after the retirement of former DGP Vikas Sahay.

On December 31, 2025, the Gujarat government had assigned the additional charge of DGP and Chief Police Officer of Gujarat to Dr K Lakshmi Narayan Rao, a 1992-batch IPS officer and Director General of Police, CID (Crime and Railways), following the superannuation of Vikas Sahay, a 1989-batch IPS officer. Dr Rao had been holding the state's top police post on an interim basis in addition to his existing responsibilities.

The state government's latest notification formally fills the vacancy, with Malik now taking over as the regular head of the Gujarat Police force. The order was issued by the Home Department from Sachivalaya, Gandhinagar, and signed by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Dr Anju Sharma.

Vikas Sahay retired on December 31, 2025, after a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades in the Indian Police Service. During his tenure as DGP, Gujarat witnessed heightened security arrangements during major festivals, elections and other high-profile events, along with a continued focus on law-and-order management and inter-state coordination.

With Malik's elevation to the post of DGP, attention will now shift to the appointment of a new Ahmedabad Police Commissioner. The change at the top is expected to trigger a reshuffle within the senior ranks of the Gujarat Police.

The appointment of Gyanendera Singh Malik takes effect immediately.

A native of Faridabad, Haryana, Malik holds degrees in Electrical Engineering and Law. Over a distinguished career spanning more than three decades, he has served in key policing and administrative roles across Gujarat, including as SP of several districts, Range IG, Additional Commissioner of Police in Ahmedabad and Vadodara, and Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad City. He has also worked in CID (Crime), Intelligence, Anti-Corruption Bureau, and the Home Department.

During his tenure as Ahmedabad Police Commissioner since 2023, he oversaw major anti-encroachment drives, citywide surveillance upgrades, and policing initiatives that contributed to Ahmedabad being ranked India's safest city in 2025 by Numbeo. He has also served with the BSF and CISF on central deputation, participated in a UN peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, and has been awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
