Ahmedabad court sentences man to 10 years for 2018 Gomtipur firing case

A City Civil and Sessions Court in Ahmedabad sentenced one Gulnawaz Khan alias Sajid Katta, to 10 years in prison for his involvement in a 2018 firing incident in the Gomtipur locality. The case involved Khan driven by personal vendetta, shooting a man named Mehfooz Mansuri. Tragically, Mansuri passed away last month due to a heart attack, missing the delivery of justice.
Sessions Judge Parimal Patel convicted Gulnawaz Khan, for the attempt of murder and under Arms Act. The court noted that accused had hatched a criminal conspiracy, acquired deadly weapons, and fired at Mansuri.
The court emphasized the need for stringent punishment to deter crime and ensure public safety. Another accused, Samir Ali alias Lakhota, who also fired at Mansuri, remains on run after being granted interim bail in 2022.
Advocate Imtiyaz Khan, representing the prosecution, stated that five eyewitnesses and the investigating officer corroborated the case. Dr Mahendra Patel, who treated Mansuri, confirmed the bullet wounds and their potential lethality.
The incident occurred on December 6, 2018, near R M Hotel opposite Amrapali Cinema in Gomtipur. Accused Khan and Sheikh shot Mansuri and fled the scene. The victim, severely injured with three bullet wounds causing significant hemorrhage, was rushed to VS Hospital for treatment.
A First Information Report (FIR) was filed at Gomtipur Police Station under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 120(B) (criminal conspiracy), and 114 (abettor present at the crime) of the Indian Penal Code, along with Sections 25(1-BA) and 27(1) of the Arms Act.
