Gujarat High Court asked the Collector of Ahmedabad to apologise to a 65-year-old man for falsely accusing him of illegal ownership of a land.

The Justice bench consisting of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Pranav Trivedi criticised the ruling government and the Ahmedabad Collector and questioned why an FIR was filed.

The case involved the collector accusing the elderly man of land grabbing, for which he was wrongfully jailed for seven days.

During the hearing, the collector faced criticism for making serious allegations without investigation, highlighting that an innocent should not be imprisoned solely based on hearsay.

The High Court noted that the complaint was registered based on the Deputy Collector’s input only. According to the principles set by the State Home Department, an investigation by a committee headed by the District Collector did not examine the original records, which was essential.

The court has now dismissed the charges against the man and has ordered the collector to submit an affidavit, urging the authorities not to repeat such mistakes.
