Ahmedabad’s Asarwa Civil Hospital recorded a heavy patient load in 2025 when it came to heart-related issues, with as many as 3,59,340 patients visiting the outpatient department during the year, while 47,630 patients required indoor admission.

On average, nearly 985 patients were treated at the hospital every day, reflecting the growing burden on public healthcare infrastructure.

At the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology, major cardiac interventions were carried out throughout the year. During 2025, balloon procedures were performed on 448 patients, cardiac devices were implanted in 1,580 patients, and pacemakers were fitted in 1,337 cases.

Under the Ayushman Bharat scheme during 2025–26, a total of 13,573 cardiac procedures were conducted, along with 3,758 surgeries and 7,453 medical treatments. Additionally, 1,107 children received cardiac treatment under the School Health Scheme.

Doctors have cautioned that cases of heart-related problems tend to rise during winter. According to medical experts, colder temperatures and dehydration cause blood to thicken. Reduced sweating and lower thirst levels during winter lead many people to consume less water, affecting blood circulation. As a result, the heart has to work harder to maintain blood flow across the body.

Hospital data over the past five years shows a steady rise in patient numbers. In 2021, Civil Hospital recorded 2,24,688 outdoor patients and 35,235 indoor admissions. This increased to 2,77,572 outdoor and 40,662 indoor patients in 2022, followed by 3,35,124 outdoor and 47,230 indoor patients in 2023.

In 2024, the figures rose further to 3,63,315 outdoor and 50,077 indoor patients, before slightly dipping to 3,59,340 outdoor and 47,630 indoor patients in 2025.
