The Satellite police in Ahmedabad have registered a theft case after cash and gold ornaments worth more than ₹3.6 lakh were allegedly stolen from the home of a city-based businessman between September 14 and 17.

According to the complaint, Hetalkumar Acharya (48), who runs a GPS device business from his residence in Nehrunagar, discovered on September 17 that cash and jewellery kept in a household locker had gone missing. Acharya lives with his wife, Vishakha (45), their daughters, Bansari (21) and Aditi (17), and employs three domestic workers, including Rekhaben Martabhai Katara, who has been working in the household for the past 12 years.

Acharya stated that following the death of a relative in Chandkheda on September 6, the family had been away frequently attending ceremonies. On September 14, he said, the family had kept ₹2 lakh in cash and his wife’s ornaments

When the family checked the locker on September 17, the cash and jewellery were missing. Reviewing the CCTV camera outside the house, the family grew suspicious of Rekhaben, the long-time domestic worker.

Acharya told the police that when questioned, Rekhaben allegedly avoided giving a clear explanation and told the family that her husband was in Rajasthan and that she would respond after consulting him. Despite waiting several days, Rekhabne did not offer any clarification, so Acharya approached the police.

Police have registered an FIR against an “unknown thief” under sections relating to theft of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigators said that while Rekhaben is the primary suspect, the role of others cannot be ruled out until the inquiry is complete.

A Satellite police officer said, “We have received the complaint and have begun an investigation. The complainant has submitted bills for the missing jewellery, which will aid the probe. Statements of the domestic help and other witnesses will be recorded and CCTV footage examined.”

As of now, no arrests had been made.
