Ahmedabad becomes India’s second-largest share-trading city in the country

Ahmedabad has overthrown cities like New Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bengaluru when it comes to share trading volume. Rajkot and Vadodara have also featured in the Top 20.
Ahmedabad’s share in trading increased 10 times on BSE and NSE
According to SEBI data, in 2018-19, average daily trading volume of ₹783 cr was traded in Ahmedabad on both the BSE and NSE. In May 2023, this figure had increased almost 10 times to ₹7,870 cr.
The average daily turnover on BSE in 2018-19 was ₹3,127 cr, of which Ahmedabad’s share was only 2.5%, or ₹78 crore. However, according to the statistics of May 2023, Ahmedabad’s share spikes to ₹988 cr, which is 23.9%.
Similarly, Ahmedabad’s total cash market turnover has also increased and stands the second highest in the country. In 2018-19, Ahmedabad’s daily trading on NSE was ₹705 cr which has now increased to ₹6,882 cr.
Rajkot and Vadodara are also among the top players
For Rajkot, earlier the daily turnover was ₹438 cr which has now increased to ₹982 cr. Vadodara and Rajkot also rank among the top 20 cities with the highest volume in the country's cash turnover segment.
Rise in demat accounts after COVID
During the epidemic, people were highly attracted towards the stock market, as there were only 4.08 cr demat accounts in the country in March 2020, which have now increased to 11.82 cr. The number of investors registered on the BSE has also increased. As of Jan 2021, 79.09 lakh investors from Gujarat were registered on the BSE, which has now increased to 1.32 cr.
