Ahmedabad auto drivers seek fare hike, minimum charge may rise to ₹30

Auto-rickshaw fares in Ahmedabad may soon increase, with driver unions proposing a revision in minimum charges following a rise in fuel and operational costs.
The Auto Rickshaw Drivers Welfare Association has suggested raising the base fare for the first 1.2 kilometres from ₹20 to ₹30. It has also proposed increasing the per-kilometre charge from ₹15 to ₹20.
In a statement, the association said the proposed hike was necessary due to mounting expenses, including higher prices of compressed natural gas (CNG), increased costs of new vehicles, spare parts, maintenance and labour, as well as rising fitness and permit charges.
The association further indicated that until the revised fares are formally approved, drivers may begin collecting the higher rates informally from passengers.
The proposed fare revision is likely to add to the financial burden on commuters, particularly those from middle-income groups, who rely heavily on auto-rickshaws for daily travel.
Authorities are yet to respond to the proposal.
