Ahmedabad airport launches ‘DigiYatra’, saving passengers’ 65% of time

More than 4,000 passengers used DigiYatra in the first week

This technology offers a contactless verification process for travellers

Updated: Aug 29th, 2023

‘DigiYatra’ has begun for certain flights of two airlines from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport in Ahmedabad. By the end of next month, all airlines from Ahmedabad airport will be connected via DigiYatra.

More than 4,000 passengers used DigiYatra in the first week. Passengers do not need to take a printout of a ticket or boarding pass while using DigiYatra. Check-in, security and boarding have been simplified with the new biometric boarding system.

Currently, it is implemented for certain flights of Akasa Air and Indigo. According to airport sources, it takes 15 minutes for a passenger to check in when travelling with hand baggage. But DigiYatra will save about 65% of their time.

What is DigiYatra?

DigiYatra, developed by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) in collaboration with the Digi Yatra Foundation, offers a Biometric-Enabled Seamless Travel (BEST) solution with Facial Recognition System (FRS).

This technology offers a contactless verification process for travellers at important stages of their journey, including entry to the airport, security checks, and boarding gates.

How does DigiYatra work?

  • Passengers first have to register at the airport or on the DigiYatra portal. Registration can be done by downloading the DigiYatra mobile app.
  • Passengers will receive a unique ID after registration, linked with the passenger’s PNR number.
  • With the help of the portal, the airlines can identify and compare details like city, airport, and airlines of the passenger. The details are sent to the airport security personnel six hours before the flight departure, for a seamless process.
  • With DigiYatra, a passenger can go through the entry gate, pre-security, and boarding gate only by scanning biometrics.
  • Passengers will be able to validate their e-ticket or boarding pass with the airline system through biometrics at various checkpoints.

Apart from Ahmedabad, DigiYatra has been implemented at New Delhi, Bengaluru, Varanasi, Vijayawada, Pune, Hyderabad, and Kolkata airports.
