The airport was generating profits before privatisation

Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport made it to the top of an unfortunate list of airports with the most losses that are operated under the public-private partnership (PPP). The airport has registered a loss of ₹408.51 crore in FY 2022-23, more than Delhi and Mumbai.

The profit-loss numbers for PPP-Operated airports were shared in Lok Sabha by the ministry of civil aviation, answering a question on the same.

Airport was profitable before privatisation

Notably, the privatisation of the SVP airport in Ahmedabad took place in 2020, and before that, the airport was profitable.

In the year 2019-18, the airport made a profit of ₹176.86 cr, which was ₹52.46 crore and ₹45.71 crore in 2019-19 and 2019-20 respectively.

Same situation with other Gujarat airports

The Adani Group-operated airport is one of the many airports of Gujarat that are not profitable.

For FY 2022-23, Vadodara has registered a loss of ₹46.71 crore, for Surat, it was ₹37.99 crore, and for Rajkot, it was 21.93 crore.

PPP airports with most losses in India

For India, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has registered the second-most loss in FY 2022-23, with ₹284.46 crore. Lucknow, Jaipur, Thiruvananthapuram, Guwahati, Mangalore, and Mumbai have also made it to the list.
