Accidents on Gujarat national highways killed over 10,000 people

Nearly 60% of road accidents on national highways in Gujarat have led to fatalities in five years, with 10,408 deaths recorded in 17,302 incidents.
Among the worst-affected stretches is National Highway 48–connecting Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat–which has reported the highest number of accidents. Other accident-prone corridors include National Highways 27, 47 and 64, officials said.
Authorities attributed the high number of accidents to factors such as overspeeding, heavy traffic, long straight stretches, road crossings and uncontrolled entry points. Overspeeding alone accounted for nearly 90% of the cases, they added.
Gujarat is among the top 10 states in the country in terms of fatalities on national highways in a year.
In comparison, Uttar Pradesh reported 17,113 accidents on national highways in 2024, resulting in 9,560 deaths, according to the data.
