An unarmed assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Bharatgiri Goswami of Kheda-Nadiad police was caught today allegedly demanding a hefty bribe from a person wanting a police clearance certificate for a passport re-verification process.

The son of the complainant, who lives in the US, had recently lost his passport and had applied at the Indian embassy in the US to obtain a new one.

Subsequently, he required a police clearance certificate from India, that needed to be submitted to the embassy.

However, when his father approached the local investigation branch (LIB) of the superintendent of police (SP) office for the same, Goswami demanded a bribe of ₹40 lakh to issue the certificate.

After negotiations, the deal was set for ₹5 lakh to issue the certificate.

Meanwhile, the complainant contacted the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and informed them.

ACB Police Inspector (PI) S N Barot set up a trap at the complainant’s residence, where the accused was asked to collect the bribe.

Goswami was caught red-handed with the bribe money.
