Academic Bank of Credits: Only 106 educational institutes registered
Despite the mandatory ABC registration policies, low numbers of registrations seen in Gujarat

As part of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP2020), the union ministry of education designed the concept of the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) to provide students with information about the credits earned by individual students throughout their learning journey.
However, so far only 106 educational institutes in Gujarat have registered on the mandatory ABC portal.
Starting this year, students of schools and higher education institutes will have to register themselves on the ABC portal. Not only students, but also all the educational institutes, including schools, colleges, and universities, will have to register.
Not enough registrations in Gujarat
Many students and educational institutions are not yet aware of ABC. There seems to be a huge shortcoming on the part of the information dissemination. The registration numbers are very weak.
Since enrollment forms have not yet been completed at several universities the ABC registration numbers are relatively low. Even at Gujarat University, only 13,000 students have registered till now.
To address this, the Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat (KCG) has organised a workshop in the first week of Oct 2023.
What is the ABC portal?
The University Grants Commission (UGC) issued a regulation in 2021 to set up Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) portal guidelines. It is designed to provide the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary mobility of students across the higher education institutions as a ‘credit transfer’ mechanism.
After registering on the portal, the student will get an account, and a credit ID for the same will be generated.
Through the unified credit curriculum framework in all the educational institutes, the student’s credit data will be transferred from one institute to another through the portal.
Failing to register on the portal may pose challenges for students when it comes to transferring between institutes.
The students will get any details about their marksheet, degree, and any other credit records from the portal.
How to register for ABC?
Students will have to create a DigiLocker account before creating ABC ID.
