The Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Botad, Umesh Makwana has irked his colleagues in the state Assembly by allegedly claiming a private parking space in the common lot attached to the MLA residences.
Elected representatives are allotted 2-BHK flats in Gandhinagar’s Sector 21, which is opposite the Old Secretariat and close to the Legislative Assembly. However, very few take up permanent residence there since they are expected to spend most of their time working for their constituents in their respective constituencies. As a result, parking spaces remain fluid.
However, recently, a board stating “Umesh Makwana, MLA” has appeared on a wall in the parking area.
According to those familiar with the development, Makwana put up this board to claim space for a brand new car. Makwana's pre-poll affidavit from 2022, when he became Botad MLA, stated that he owned a four-wheeler and a two-wheeler, cumulatively worth ₹8 lakh.
This parking controversy is not the only issue surrounding the AAP MLA. While he has been given security by the government, the Botad Superintendent of Police denied his request for an arms licence. In response, Makwana made a representation in the House to the Home Minister regarding this matter.
The combination of these incidents has drawn attention to the AAP representative’s actions and requests, raising questions about MLA privileges and security concerns in the state Assembly.
