Aam Aadmi Party MLA Umesh Makwana demanded Bharat Ratna award for Bhavnagar’s erstwhile ruler Krushna Kumarsinhji Gohil at the Assembly today.

Makwana said it was Krushna Kumarsinhji who handed over the first state to Independent India including the wealth gifted by his in-laws to his wife.

Makwana, speaking during a cut motion in the assembly session, also cited the financial situation of Bhavnagar city which earlier used to be developed and prosperous. He said that the former ruler’s soul must be unhappy seeing the current state of Bhavanagar totally different today than what he left it as.

He said Bhavnagar was once a golden bird, but today the ports of Bhavnagar are not operating properly. This has resulted in unemployment in Bhavnagar and youth have had to migrate to other places. “People in Bhavnagar are not happy,” Makwana claimed.

Last year, senior leader Shankarsinh Vaghela had also appealed to the Akhil Gujarat Kshatriya Rajput Samaj to pass a resolution demanding Bharat Ratna for the former ruler while addressing the community at an event in Surat.

Similarly, BJP leaders from Bhavnagar Bhupendrasinh Gohil, PT Jadeja from Rajkot and Morari Bapu have also made similar demands.
