The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has named Gopal Italia as a candidate for upcoming bypoll in Gujarat's Visavadar Vidhan Sabha seat on Sunday.

"Many congratulations and best wishes to Gopal Italia on being announced as the Aam Aadmi Party candidate in the Visavadar Assembly by-election," shared AAP Gujarat handle on X.

Visavadar assembly constituency is part of Junagadh district and a segment of Junagadh Lok Sabha constituency.

The seat was scheduled for bypoll after AAP MLA Bhupendra  Bhayani resigned in last December.

Notably, Visavadar seat has not been a stronghold of the BJP as AAP got majority seats in the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections.

In 2022, there was a fierce contest between BJP candidate Harsh Ribadiya and AAP's Bhupat Bhayani, with Bhayani emerging victorious and becoming an MLA. However, within just a year, he resigned from his position, leaving the seat vacant. As a result, the by-election can be scheduled at any time, and AAP has already started gearing up for the contest.

AAP has recently appointed Gopal Rai as the state in-charge of Gujarat to formulate the political strategies for the party in Gujarat.
