‘Cupid killers’: A look at gruesome incidents involving love interests

As love was expressed and celebrated profoundly on this Valentine’s Day, a look back at some ill incidents displays how the special feelings have turned into foul memories for some over the years.

Gujarat has seen 1,446 murders in the past 10 years with a love angle involved.

Most of these murders, 179, were committed in 2021. This number slid to 134 in 2022.

Gujarat registers more cases of murders owing to love interest than politics, infidelity, and personal vendettas.

Murders in Gujarat over love interest:

Ahmedabad has reported 40 such murders in the last five years. In 2022, the city reported eight such cases, while Surat reported five.

1,401 murders were reported nationwide in 2022 over love interests.

In the state-wise classification of such murders that year, Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 253 murders, followed by Bihar with 171, Madhya Pradesh with 146, Maharashtra with 143, and Gujarat with the fifth highest numbers.

Psychologists’ take on murders in love

Psychologists believe that one-sided love is also considered a reason for such incidents taking place.

Rejection of love is also not received well by many, which also leads to such incidents, according to experts.
