96,000 suggestions & objections received by UCC committee in Gujarat

A committee formed by the government of Gujarat to review the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has received a total of 96,000 objections and suggestions from various sources across the state. Retired SC judge, Dr Ranjana Desai, who heads the committee, will soon submit the final report to the state government based on these objections.
Before moving forward with the implementation of the UCC, the state government set up a committee under the leadership of Dr Desai. Various organisations from different parts of the state presented their views to the committee.
The process of collecting objections and suggestions has now been concluded. On Saturday, leaders from minority organisations, including the Muslim Welfare Committee, voiced their concerns and opposition to Dr Desai.
Sources indicate that there has been significant opposition from minority communities in Gujarat regarding the implementation of the UCC.
By the final day of the process, the committee had received a total of 96,000 objections and suggestions. Based on these inputs, the committee has already started drafting the UCC.
Dr Desai’s committee is expected to submit its report to the state government soon, and the government will use the report as the basis to implement the UCC in Gujarat.
The Gujarat government on April 3, initiated discussions on the implementation of the UCC, a legal reform aimed at ensuring uniform personal laws for all citizens, irrespective of religion, with a key committee meeting in Surat.
