95-year-old woman found dead in Khokhra, police probe foul play

The Khokhra police have launched an investigation after a 95-year-old woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her rented accommodation in Haripura locality on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased, identified as Dhaniben Ramabhai Vaghela, had been living in a small rented house in Haripura for several years. Police said that preliminary examination revealed injury marks around her neck, raising suspicion of strangulation.

Her nephew, Bipinbhai Ramabhai Vaghela, who resides in the same area, informed the police after discovering her body. A team from Khokhra police station rushed to the spot, cordoned off the house and began preliminary inquiries.

“The woman was found unresponsive with visible marks on her neck. We have registered an Accidental Death (AD) entry for now. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination at Civil Hospital, and further course of action will depend on the medical report,” a police officer said.

According to locals, Dhaniben was known to be independent despite her advanced age and would often manage her daily chores on her own. Neighbours expressed shock at the incident, describing her as quiet and well-respected in the locality.

While police have not ruled out the possibility of natural causes, the visible injuries have prompted suspicion of possible foul play or attempted robbery. Officers said they are verifying whether any valuables were missing from the house.

Senior police officials confirmed that a forensic team had also been called to the spot to collect evidence. Statements of family members and neighbours are being recorded.

“We are awaiting the post-mortem findings. Based on that, we will decide whether to register a case of homicide,” the officer added.
