In ‘dry state’ Gujarat, an average of at least nine people are caught daily for drink-and-drive violations in Ahmedabad.

Despite the state’s liquor prohibition policy, a total of 580 drink-and-drive cases have already been registered in the first five months of 2025. Strict action has been taken against those found guilty.

In 2024, Gujarat recorded 2,081 such cases. Looking at the statistics over the past five years, Ahmedabad has consistently seen an average of nine people caught every day for driving under the influence of alcohol.

A police officer offering a solution, stated that while conducting breathalyzer tests, officers should carry a camera to record the test results. This would help ensure transparency, reduce corruption, and provide more concrete evidence for filing FIRs.

Notably, Ahmedabad reported 233 drink  and drive cases alone on the night of December 31, according to DCP in-charge Reema Munshi. Drugs were also seized from Sindhu Bhavan Road on the New Year’s Eve, the complaint for which was registered in Bopal.
