At least 72 fishermen from Gujarat, including several from Vapi’s Umargam taluka, who had been stranded on Iran’s Kish Island during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, have begun their journey to Armenia after obtaining visas, following more than a month of uncertainty.

The fishermen had been stuck on the island for 35 days as tensions escalated in the region, leaving their families back home deeply concerned. Many of them reportedly remained on their boats for safety as the conflict intensified, further heightening fears for their well-being.

With the situation showing little sign of improvement and risks mounting after over 30 days of hostilities, the group approached Iranian authorities seeking permission to leave. They were subsequently granted 20-day visas to travel to Armenia, located approximately 1,500 kilometres away, and departed by road.

In videos shared by the fishermen, they described the worsening situation, stating that the prolonged conflict had increased their anxiety and financial hardship. They also revealed that they had exhausted their funds and were unable to afford their return to India.

The group has appealed to the Indian government to facilitate their repatriation from Armenia, suggesting arrangements via Dubai as a possible route back home.

Reports indicate that more than 1,000 individuals from various regions are currently waiting in Armenia for onward travel to India. However, concerns remain as the visas issued are valid for only 20 days. If the fishermen are unable to return within this period, they risk having their visas cancelled and may be required to return to Iran.
