70% suicide victims in Gujarat had income less than ₹1 lakh: Report

As many as 6,329 out of total 8,948 people who had committed suicide in Gujarat were earning less than ₹1 lakh per annum, the Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India 2023, report by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) revealed.

This figure amounts to over 70% of total suicides in Gujarat in 2023. 4,176 male, 2,150 females and 3 transgender who fall under this income category in the state have committed suicide.

Gujarat saw a slight dip in number of suicides of 0.6%, as 8,948 people had committed suicide in the state in 2023, compared to that of 9,002 in the year 2022, the report says.

However, Ahmedabad city saw a rise in suicides by 6% during this time period, as 984 people died by suicide in 2023, compared to that of 928 in the state in 2022.

Low income and suicides

As many as 2,211 people falling in the income bracket of ₹1 lakh and above but less ₹5 lakh had committed suicide in Gujarat in 2023. 398 suicides were such where income falls under ₹5 lakh or more but less than ₹10 lakh in the state. Only 10 people who’s income was ₹10 lakh or more had committed suicide in the state in 2023.

Daily wage earners leads in suicides

Apart from this, 3,216 including 2,958 male and 258 female daily wage earners have committed suicide in the state in 2023. This figure 3,216 stands to almost 35% of total 8,948 suicides in Gujarat in 2023. Followed by 1,118 self employed persons and 880 professionals/salaried persons working in public sector enterprise have committed suicide in Gujarat in 2023.

Educational status

Total 2,065 people including 1,455 male and 608 females who committed suicide had education up to class-10 in the state. Followed by 1,915 persons having education till class-8.

This continues with 1,721 persons who studied till class-12 had committed suicide in Gujarat. 1,411 people with class-5 education had committed suicide, whereas 866 with no education had taken such extreme in the state in 2023.

More married people committed suicide

Total 5,948 people who were married committed suicide in 2023, which included 4,109 male and 1,839 females.

On the other hand, 2,424 people including 1,715 male, 707 females and 2 transgender who were unmarried had committed suicide in the state. 216 widowed/widower and 91 divorcees had taken such an extreme step in Gujarat.

In all total 6,260 male, 2,685 females and 3 transgender had committed suicide in the state in 2023.
