70 lakh trees planted in Ahmedabad in three years PM Modi mentions in Mann Ki Baat

In his Sunday address of ‘Mann Ki Baat’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the city saying, “Ahmedabad has become one of the major cities fighting against global warming.”

He said that in the last few years, more than 70 lakh trees have been planted in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. These trees have increased the green area in Ahmedabad to a great extent. Along with that, the number of water bodies has also increased here due to the construction of the Riverfront on the Sabarmati River and the reconstruction of some lakes like Kankaria Lake. Now news reports say that in the last few years, Ahmedabad has become one of the major cities fighting against global warming, he said.

To tackle the challenge of climate change, the PM called upon citizens to plant trees through the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.

Between 2020-21 and 2024-25, more than 83 lakh trees were planted in Ahmedabad. Through the ‘Mission Million Trees’ initiative, intensive tree plantation has been carried out with active citizen participation.

Over the past five years, more than 2.68 urban forests and oxygen parks have been developed. As a result, the tree cover in the city, which was 6.4% in 2023, has increased to 8.4% in 2024. Ahmedabad’s current tree cover now spans 67 sq km, accounting for around 12.5% of the city’s total area.

However, despite PM Modi’s claim of Amdavadis experiencing “coolness in the environment”, in April 2025, Ahmedabad was among the hottest cities in India, with temperatures reaching 44°C. On Monday, the mercury rose to 44°C with a yellow alert, reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
