68 tonnes of waste cleared from Sabarmati riverbed in single day under 'Swachh Sabarmati' drive

In a significant step towards environmental conservation, the Swachh Sabarmati Mahaabhiyan 2026 was inaugurated at the Sabarmati riverfront.
On the very first day, over 7,500 enthusiastic citizens turned up in large numbers, demonstrating strong public support for the initiative.
Together, they collected approximately 68 tonnes of waste from the Sabarmati riverbed, marking a promising beginning to the campaign.
The drive aims to rid the river of plastic and other pollutants, restore its ecological health, and create a cleaner, greener Sabarmati.
It will continue till June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day, giving citizens multiple opportunities to participate.
Organisers - Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) have extended an open invitation to all residents, NGOs, educational institutions, corporate organizations, and civil society groups to join the movement.
Volunteers are expected to engage in waste collection, awareness activities, and riverbed cleaning across various stretches of the Sabarmati.
The cleanliness drive was formally launched by Health Minister Rushikesh Patel, Darshanaben Vaghela, and Mayor Hitesh Barot.
