₹500cr worth business for Surat’s textile industry before Ganeshotsav

The mandap business flourished after the pandemic, yielding ₹200 cr more this year

Following the vibrant celebrations of Janmashtami, Gujarat eagerly awaits Ganesh Chaturthi. The preparations for the same are in full swing in the state and across the country.

The president of the Surat Mandap Cloth Association, Dev Sancheti, said that this year's Ganeshotsav will bring good profits to the Surat textile market.

The Mandaps (tents) built across the cities are an integral part of these celebrations. The tent business has flourished after the pandemic, yielding ₹200 cr more this year, according to Sancheti.

He informed that around 250-300 traders are associated with the tent businesses. This year, for these tents, different sizes of fabrics were sold at varied prices ranging from ₹1,200 to ₹1,500.

A fabric named ‘lycra’ is the most expensive among other tent fabrics. An embroidered lycra fabric is sold at ₹60-₹70 per metre, whereas non-embroidered fabric costs around ₹25-₹30 per metre.

‘Chandarvo fabric’, famous in Maha

Since Ganesh Chaturthi is an important festival in Maharashtra, lakhs of metres of fabric was traded there from Surat.

Maharashtra is the biggest customer of Surat’s fabric, followed by Gujarat’s Vapi and Valsad.

Surat’s chandarvo fabric is highly celebrated in the markets of Maharashtra. From metro cities like Mumbai to small cities in Maharashtra, people celebrate Ganeshotsav using fabric from Gujarat for decorative tents.

Along with this, Taiwan Roto fabric of Surat is also seen in the demands of Maharashtra.
