491 people injured daily in road accidents in Gujarat in five months

Gujarat has been witnessing a spate of road accidents. Recently, on Saturday night, a collision between a truck and a motorcycle on the Surendranagar-Dhrangadhra road claimed the lives of three young men. 

A similar accident occurred on Sunday on the road from Ambod to Gandhinagar, resulting in one fatality. Road accidents in Gujarat are steadily increasing. Between January and May this year, a total of 73,624 people were injured in road accidents. On average, 491 people are injured in road accidents every day in Gujarat.

According to emergency service ‘108’, during the same period last year (January to May), 68,209 people were injured.

Compared to that, this year there has been a 10% increase in road accident injuries. Currently, on average, 20 people per hour require hospitalisation due to road accidents.

Ahmedabad records highest injuries in accidents

This year, Ahmedabad district recorded the highest number of accident-related injuries, with 11,835 people injured in road accidents. This means that in Ahmedabad alone, an average of 79 people per day were hospitalised following road accidents.

In comparison, 11,266 people were injured in Ahmedabad last year, indicating an increase in accident-related injuries.

After Ahmedabad, Surat ranks second with 7,881 injuries, followed by Vadodara (5,015), Rajkot (3,748), and Gandhinagar (2,558).

In Surat, 7,166 people were injured last year in road accidents.

Experts say most accidents occur on highways. Additionally, the use of mobile phones while driving has also contributed significantly to the rise in road accidents.
