In one of the biggest crackdowns on illegal mining operations in Gujarat, Surendranagar police detained more than 42 people linked to mineral theft and transportation networks across the district.

Raids were carried out early morning across Sayla, Muli, and Thangadh talukas, where police teams picked up suspects allegedly involved in running a digital surveillance network to monitor government officials and help mining mafias avoid action.

According to investigators, the accused had created more than 10 WhatsApp groups used to track the live movement and locations of police teams, mining department officials and other government vehicles. Authorities suspect the groups functioned as an organised alert system for illegal mining operators.

Police said the network extended beyond mining operators. Owners and workers at roadside hotels, grocery stores and paan shops located along highways were allegedly being used as informants to pass real-time updates on official movement. Several such individuals were also detained during the operation.

All detained persons were taken to the office of the Surendranagar Police for questioning and further legal action.

Sayla police officials confirmed that a detailed investigation into the alleged network is underway. Authorities are currently examining WhatsApp group admins, mobile data, and digital communication records before releasing official details on the scale of the operation.

Police have also warned others linked to the network that more action may follow as forensic analysis of chats, call records and device activity continues.
