Construction sites sealed, fined in Ahmedabad over norm violations

55 construction sites in Northwest Zone fined ₹17.71 lakh

The AMC had issued notices to 85 construction sites in the Northwest Zone, out of which 55 have been fined to the tune of ₹17.71 lakh for not complying with the safety-environmental norms.

Seven construction sites in areas like Chandlodia, Gota, Bodakdev, and Thaltej were also sealed.

It was the second consecutive day of AMC’s drive to seal construction sites violating safety and environmental norms on Oct 27. 25 sites were sealed in a single day over repetitive violations of the norms.

₹30,000 in administrative charges were also collected from the four sites sealed in the north zone.

As the winter approaches and the temperatures descend in Ahmedabad, the city’s air quality index (AQI) is expected to spiral up, indicating a significant decline in the city’s air quality.

To prevent damage to the city’s environment, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) took serious action against construction sites failing to meet safety and environmental guidelines on Oct 26.

AMC raids across 48 wards

The AMC’s town planning and estate management  department conducted raids and sealed 41 construction sites across 48 wards of the city on Oct 26. These strict actions were undertaken after repeated instructions from the AMC to install safety nets and green sheets at the construction sites were not taken into consideration.

As per the guidelines issued by municipal commissioner M Thennarasan, the installation of green sheets was made mandatory at all construction sites across the city.

This order was released due to the increasing damage to the city’s environment by dust particles dispersed by construction sites.

Safety standards were violated as well

Apart from green anti-pollution sheets, no barricading, safety netting, etc were installed on many of these construction sites, compromising the lives of construction workers on these sites.

Following the violation of these norms, 26 construction sites in east zone, 5 in south zone, 3 sites each in northwest, west, and north zones, and 1 in southwest zone were sealed.
