The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has completed the development of 41 lakes within the city limits and plans to interlink them while introducing sewage treatment systems to ensure that the water bodies remain filled with water throughout the year.

Under the proposed plan, sewage water will be treated through sewage treatment plants (STPs) and released into the lakes to maintain water levels and improve water management in different parts of Ahmedabad.

The civic body has also received approval under the National River Conservation Project to implement a pilot project aimed at improving water quality in selected lakes using innovative technologies.

The project will deploy three types of technologies, including nano bubble technology, to enhance the quality of treated sewage water and prevent the growth of aquatic plants such as lilies and water lilies.

Meanwhile, development work on 17 additional lakes in various areas of the city is currently underway, while another 19 lakes are planned to be developed in the coming phase, they said.

The civic body also plans to set up mini STPs near lakes to help recharge groundwater levels in surrounding areas. Once the lakes are interlinked, excess water from lakes connected to mini STPs can be diverted to other lakes.

As part of the pilot project, five lakes will see the installation of technologies designed to increase dissolved oxygen levels in treated water while reducing biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The systems to be deployed include nano bubble generators, surface aerators, deep aerators and ultrasound generators.

The pilot project will be implemented at the following lakes in Ahmedabad:

- Sarkhej Makarba Lake

- Sarkhej Bedar Lake

- Ranip Chenpur Lake

- Chandkheda Lake

- Nikol–Surabhi Lake
