PM Modi, UAE prez to hold roadshow in Ahmedabad before Vibrant Gujarat Summit

To promote the event, roadshows will be held in Lucknow, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Delhi

A delegation including 10 IAS officers have been sent to different countries

Prime minister Narendra Modi is set to hold a roadshow in Ahmedabad on Jan 9, a day before the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) takes place on Jan 10-12 in the state capital, Gandhinagar.

PM Modi will be accompanied by United Arab Emirates (UAE) president Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in the road show scheduled to take place from the Ahmedabad airport to the city’s Sabarmati Ashram.

Cultural programmes and dances from different states will be performed throughout the roadshow route.

Modi and the UAE president will then head to Gandhinagar on the next day to inaugurate the 10th Vibrant summit.

Special arrangements made for the summit

Interpreters of French, English, Arabic, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, and other languages will be delegated to the foreign dignitaries for their ease of communication. Liaison officers have also been directed to stay in touch with the interpreters.

Safety measures have also been amped in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, as more than 100 fire brigade personnel from six municipal corporations and four municipalities have been delegated to the summit.

Fire staff will be deployed at prime locations, including Mahatma Mandir, and 15 different locations around Gandhinagar’s Leela hotel, GIFT City club.

MoU with state’s forest dept for Mangrove cultivation

Gujarat’s forest department has signed a MoU (memorandum of understanding) of ₹2,217 cr with Ahmedabad-based ReNew Power on Jan 2 to plant mangroves to earn carbon credits and reduce carbon emissions.

The company will plant mangroves on over 61,776 acres of land in the state.

It will establish new projects after planting and maintaining the mangroves or ‘Cher’ trees.

Local communities will also be involved in the mangrove cultivation, and a portion of the profit made through the carbon credits earned will be given to them.

This project will be undertaken after verifying the carbon emission reduction, and an inspection of its maintenance, registration, and documentation will be kept thoroughly.

Several industrial groups signed 23 more MoUs worth ₹1 lakh cr on Dec 13.

Before the Vibrant Summit begins in January 2024, companies have signed more than 100 MoUs worth ₹1.35 lakh cr.

Because of this, employment generation is expected in sectors like ports, power, auto-engineering, mineral, textile, education, and agriculture, among others.

Around 70,000 employment opportunities are expected to be generated through these MoUs.

The Vibrant Gujarat Summit, scheduled for January 2024, will witness 16 countries and 14 organisations, an official said on Dec 6.

The partner countries this year are Japan, Finland, Morocco, South Korea, Mozambique, Estonia, UAE, Australia, UK, the Netherlands, Norway, Nepal, Thailand, Bangladesh, Germany, and Egypt.

In addition, 14 partner organisations have also pledged their support for the event.

These organisations include the American Chamber of Commerce in India (AMCHAM India), Canada India Foundation, EPIC India-University of Chicago, Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC), Indo-Canadian Chamber of Commerce (ICCC), Indo-African Chamber of Commerce and Industry, International Solar Alliance, Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), Netherlands Business Support Office (NBSO), The Council of EU Chambers of Commerce in India, UAE India Business Council, US India Business Council (USIBC), US India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), and the Indian Business Chamber in Vietnam (INCHAM).

Around 35 partner countries were expected to attend the summit, however, the number is set to fall drastically short after countries like Israel, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Italy, Poland, Singapore, Denmark, France, and Uzbekistan will be absent from this year.

The summit will also observe the absence of several countries amid wars (Russia, Israel) and bilateral tensions (Canada).

After Canada’s exit over faltering bilateral terms, Japan, the Netherlands, Denmark, Nepal, Mozambique, and Morocco have been invited as new partner countries to the Vibrant Summit in Jan 2024. These countries will be included in the 35 countries scheduled to attend the summit.

2,600 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed by the state government in light of the Vibrant Summit, with an investment amount totalling ₹45,604 cr. These investments see projects carried out in 32 districts of the state. However, there has been a significant lack between the MoU signing amounts and actual investments being made.

After a gap of five years, Vibrant Global Summit will be held from Jan 10-12, 2024. Preparations are in full swing for the Gujarat government’s flagship event, with the Sachivalaya buzzing with meetings. 

The three committees have been created through separate government resolutions including the core committee chaired by the chief minister and the industries minister serving as the vice-chairman along with 28 members, the executive committee, headed by the additional chief secretary of the Industries and Mines Department, along with 128 members, and the advisory committee, have also pushed the pedal.  

This year marks the 20th year of the biennial investor summit where more than 35 partner countries are likely to remain present. 

Apart from this, a total of 150 countries, including countries like Canada and Germany are invited to participate in the Vibrant Gujarat Summit.

New partner countries 

Compared to the Vibrant Gujarat Summit held in 2019 which had 19 partner countries,the upcoming edition will see almost double the number of partners. It is likely that more than 35 partner countries including Israel, Japan, Norway, Finland, UAE, UK, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Italy, Poland, Singapore, Denmark, Australia, France, Netherlands, South Korea, Morocco, and Uzbekistan, will participate. Sources say that more than 10,000 delegates are expected to remain present for the three day long event. 

Last time, despite having completed all the preparations for the summit, the event was called off due to the spread of the COVID-19 and its new variant Omicron.

Roadshows will be held

To promote the event, roadshows will be held in Lucknow, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Delhi in September. Some overseas roadshows have also been planned.

Delegates, including 10 IAS were sent abroad

A delegation including 10 IAS officers have been sent to different countries, to attract maximum investment in the state. According to reports, the officers will then have to present their evaluation.

During this time, they are also expected to plan the investments in advance with companies and initiate a discussion with potential investors.
