Three foreign-educated medicos from Gujarat lose right to practice over providing misleading information
The results of three students from Gujarat, who had completed their medical studies abroad and cleared the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), have been cancelled over eligibility issues.
Moreover, the results and passing certificates of five other candidates from across the country have also been revoked.
The three students from Gujarat whose results stand cancelled are Neil Sathwar and Janvi Patel from Anand, and Farhan Mansuri from Ahmedabad. The National Board of Examination (NBE) has informed the respective medical councils to revoke their passing certificates. As a result, registration numbers granted for medical practice based on these certificates will also be revoked.
Upon reviewing the candidates’ documents, the NBE found discrepancies that stated their qualifications insufficient or invalid for the exam. The discrepancies included forged documents, incomplete courses, and provisional certificates that misled the authorities.
It was also discovered that some students from Gujarat and other states completed internships during their sixth to twelfth semesters, and new subjects were introduced during the sixth year.
The NBE stated that provisional certificates submitted for eligibility were misleading, and the degrees were issued beyond the session cutoff dates. Consequently, the results and passing certificates for all eight students have been revoked, including five from the December 2023 session and three from the June 2023 session.
As per the Medical Commission’s regulations, students who complete their MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) from foreign universities must pass the FMGE conducted by NBE to obtain medical practice registration in India.
The NBE conducts the FMGE twice a year, in June and December. Before appearing for the exam, candidates must obtain an eligibility certificate based on their primary medical qualifications, submitting various documents related to their course, subjects, and internship completed abroad.
