The Gujarat Medical Council has suspended the licences of three doctors, including one from Ahmedabad, in separate cases of alleged malpractice and medical negligence. Among them is a gynaecologist in Gir Somnath whose licence was suspended for a year after an investigation linked lapses in treatment to the deaths of three pregnant women.

The disciplinary action follows inquiries that found violations ranging from misrepresentation of qualifications and suspected insurance irregularities to serious lapses in clinical protocol.

Gir Somnath gynaecologist suspended after maternal deaths

The most serious action was taken against Dr Akshay J Hadiyal, a gynaecologist at Vaghasiya Hospital and Maternity Home in Gir Somnath district. His licence has been suspended for one year after the council found him guilty of medical negligence.

The inquiry found that surgeries were performed without the presence of an anaesthetist and that essential medical procedures were not followed. Investigators also noted that required pre-operative tests were not conducted and patient vitals were not properly monitored.

Post-operative protocols were not followed, and the doctor reportedly failed to cooperate fully with the investigation committee.

Authorities said the lapses in treatment were linked to the deaths of three pregnant women.

The decision has sparked debate, with some questioning whether a one-year suspension is adequate punishment in a case involving multiple maternal deaths and calling for stricter action.

Ahmedabad doctor accused of misrepresenting qualifications

In a separate case, the council suspended the licence of Dr Bhargav Dipakbhai Patel, owner of Vallis Multi-Speciality Hospital near Science City in Ahmedabad, for six months.

According to the council, Dr Patel was practising as an MD in General Medicine despite holding only a foreign medical degree considered equivalent to an MBBS qualification, misleading patients by presenting himself as a specialist.

Investigators also found that he allegedly misused documents belonging to gynaecologist Dr Hiral Koli without her knowledge to secure his inclusion on the doctors’ panel of an insurance company by forging signatures and stamps.

A police investigation into the alleged document misuse is underway.

Rajkot doctor suspended over insurance records

The council also suspended the licence of Dr Manoj Keshubhai Sida, associated with Shri Samarpan Hospital—now known as Gokul Hospital—in Rajkot, for six months.

According to Gujarat Medical Council member Dr Mahesh Patel, Dr Sida was found guilty of submitting suspicious medical records in connection with medical insurance claims. He was also practising as an MD in General Medicine despite holding only a foreign MBBS degree.

Questions raised on accountability

The suspensions have renewed concerns over regulatory oversight and accountability in the medical sector, particularly in cases involving serious negligence and loss of life.
