294 mothers donate breast milk in first month of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital’s human milk bank

Ahmedabad’s Asarwa Civil Hospital’s newly launched Human Milk Bank has completed its first month, bringing hope and nourishment to newborns. During this period, around 294 donor mothers donated their breast milk, providing life-saving nutrition to more than 258 newborn babies.
As per available information, in one month the Human Milk Bank collected a total of 153.95 litres of human milk. Currently, 14.5 litres of pasteurised milk and 7.8 litres of unpasteurised milk are in storage. Doctors at Civil Hospital say that for mothers who suffer breast pain from milk oversupply, donating milk at the bank provides relief.
At the same time, newborns who are initially unable to breastfeed directly can receive their mother’s milk, which supports their nutrition and development.
In the first month, a total of 294 mothers have used the milk-extraction facility, and 258 babies have benefited from the milk. Of these, 243 babies received their own mother’s milk and 15 babies received donor mothers’ milk.
Dr Vaishnav, head of the hospital’s paediatric department, stated that among the recipients, 170 newborns were from the hospital’s neonatal ICU and 103 were from the KMC ward (care for premature), all of whom received milk from the bank.
