27-year-old kills mother in Sola after a quarrel over his marriage

Tension gripped the Sola area of Ahmedabad late Tuesday night after a 27-year-old man allegedly killed his mother during a heated argument over his marriage. Police said the accused, identified as Vraj Contractor, assaulted his 55-year-old mother Parulben Contractor, at their residence in Vardhman Krupa flats in Sattadhar.

According to investigators, Vraj had frequent disputes with his parents over their insistence that he settle down. Neighbours told police that such quarrels were common in the Contractor household, but Tuesday’s altercation escalated beyond control.

“On Tuesday evening, a verbal spat broke out between Vraj and his mother. In a fit of rage, he attacked her and punched her back, leading to severe injuries. She was immediately shifted to Sola Civil Hospital but succumbed during treatment,” said a senior police officer at Sola police station.

Parulben’s husband and other residents of the society rushed her to the hospital after finding her unconscious in the flat. Doctors confirmed that she had sustained internal injuries caused by blunt force assault.

Following the incident, Sola police registered a case of murder under the BNS Section and arrested Vraj. “The accused is under custody and is being interrogated. We are also recording the statements of neighbours and family members to establish the sequence of events,” the officer added.

Police said Vraj had been unemployed for some time and would often remain at home, adding to tensions within the family. His father, who was present during the incident, reportedly tried to intervene but failed to prevent the assault.

The body of Parulben was handed over to the family after post-mortem examination on Wednesday morning. The case has shocked residents of Sattadhar, who said they were still struggling to come to terms with the murder within their residential block.
