21-year-old woman accuses landlord of assault, coercion to marry in Ahmedabad
A 21-year-old woman has filed a police complaint accusing her landlord of forcibly entering her house, assaulting her, threatening self-harm and repeatedly pressuring her to marry him.
As per the first information report (FIR) registered on January 27, the incident occurred around 4 pm when the complainant, identified as Saika Sheikh, was alone at her rented residence near Dudheshwar Road in the Madhavpura area.
The woman stated that when she was alone at home, her landlord, Dawood Mujibur Sheikh, who resides in an adjoining premises, entered her house. She alleged that he grabbed her and insisted that she marry him, threatening that he would kill himself if she refused. The accused produced a knife-like weapon and struck her on the hand during the confrontation.
Meanwhile, her younger brother arrived in the house to drink water and intervened. The accused allegedly threatened self-harm and struck himself with the weapon. When the siblings tried to disarm him, the accused allegedly assaulted the brother.
Following the incident, the woman and her brother somehow managed to flee to their mother’s house in the same locality. However, the complaint alleged that the accused chased them and entered her mother's house. The confrontation ended only after the woman’s father intervened and neighbours gathered, forcing the accused to leave.
The woman’s sister subsequently alerted the police control room, following which a police team reached the area. Later, the family approached the police station to lodge a formal complaint. The brother was also taken for medical examination for injuries sustained to his hand, police said.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case against the accused under relevant sections of the BNS about assault, criminal intimidation and unlawful entry. Police officials said further action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
