21 die in Gujarat every day in road accidents: 2022 Report

Highway accidents, overspeeding, and accidents like the ISKCON Bridge tragedy has eclipsed Gujarat with a heightened numbers of road accidents.
The numbers were revealed in a report by the ministry of road transport and highways on Oct 31, where a total of 4,61,312 road accidents were reported by the states and Union Territories (UTs) during the calendar year 2022, claiming 1,68,491 lives in the country.
Accidents in Gujarat
Gujarat ranks tenth on the list of road accidents, with a considerable share of 3.40%. A total of 15,751 deaths were reported due to road accidents in 2022. The numbers had increased, reaching 15,186 in 2021.
In a span of five years, 36,626 individuals lost their lives to road accidents.

Through the year, 43 road accidents were reported daily, leading to a loss of 21 lives on an average.

The infamous hit-and-run cases seemed to rule the tragic surge of road accidents, as 1,429 people died due to 2,209 hit-and-run cases in Gujarat in 2022.
A total of 7,618 individuals lost their lives in road accidents in 2022. The report stated that 7,236 of them resulted from overspeeding, while 6,999 of them died on the spot.

Roads turn fatal for cyclists
A total of 161 cyclists died in road accidents in 2022, and 128 suffered severe injuries.
3,381 individuals driving two-wheelers died in road accidents: 886 rickshaw drivers, 1,045 car drivers, 645 truck drivers, and 109 passengers travelling by bus.
Among other states, Tamil Nadu, with 64,105 accidents (13.9%), recorded the highest number of road accidents in 2022, followed by Madhya Pradesh (54,432, i.e., 11.8%).
Highest road fatalities in UP
Uttar Pradesh (22,595 i.e., 13.4%) topped the States in respect of the number of fatalities due to road accidents, followed by Tamil Nadu (17,884 i.e., 10.6%). During 2022, out of 4,61,312 accidents, 1,51,997 (32.9%) took place on the National Highways (NH) including Expressways, 1,06,682 (23.1%) on State Highways (SH), and the remaining 2,02,633 (43.9%) on other roads.
