The Chairperson of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, P P Chaudhary, has clarified that the schedule for the 2027 Gujarat Assembly elections will remain unchanged.

According to the JPC Chairperson, the government elected in the 2027 Assembly polls will complete its full five-year term as per the existing schedule. Any changes in election synchronisation under the proposed ‘One Nation, One Election’ framework would only be considered after 2029, if the bill is passed and implemented.

The statement further noted that future Gujarat Assembly election schedules could later be adjusted to align with simultaneous national and state elections. In such a scenario, elections may be held in either 2032 or 2034 depending on the final model adopted.

It was also indicated that provisions such as extending a government’s tenure by two years or conducting a shorter two-year term could be explored to bring state elections in sync with the nationwide electio

n cycle.
