The government introduced the Land Grabbing (Prohibition) Act in parliament to prevent any agricultural or private land from falling prey to encroachers. The implementation of this Act is underway.

The district collector hears a complaint and, if necessary, files a complaint under the Land Grabbing Act.

Till now, 2,016 applications have been filed under the Land Grabbing Act with the Ahmedabad collector, while action on over 24 applications has been taken under suo moto cognizance.

409 accused while 96 FIRs filed regarding land-grabbing cases

FIRs in 96 applications out of 2,016 have been filed under the Land Grabbing Act in the Ahmedabad Collectorate. In these FIRs, around 409 people have been accused.

Apart from that, a committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the Collector to overlook and eliminate any elements making false complaints about someone else’s land using loopholes in the law. The committee meets once a month and has met 19 to 20 times till now.

317 cases await inquiry, 1,436 applications took more than the time specified

In the 2,016 applications received by the Ahmedabad Collector, land grabbing was claimed on 2.85 cr sq m of land. This land is estimated to be worth ₹2985 cr, while its net worth is around ₹727 cr.

The committee has also rejected as many as 1,627 applications.

Among the applications received, the preliminary investigation has been completed in 287, while 1,436 applications have taken more than the time stipulated for the preliminary investigation.

34 cases have been referred to the special court, and around 317 cases are pending any inquiry.
