20 Guj cops among 204 police personnel chosen for Special Operation Medal

The Union Home Minister’s Special Operation Medal for the year 2023 has been awarded for four special operations to personnel and officers of CRPF, NIA, NCB and various state police. The medals were announced today. 

Gujarat police officers in the list

 A total of 20 police officers and personnel from Gujarat, including deputy inspector general of police (DIG) Deepan Bhadran and deputy superintendent of police (DySP) Bhavesh Rojiya, have been selected for the award.

According to the ministry of home affairs, 51 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officials and personnel including inspector general of police (IG), commandant, inspector, head constable among others have been awarded for their operations from Feb 8, 2022 to Sept 9, 2022. 

Similarly, nine officers of National Investigation Agency (NIA) including IG, DIG, DySP have been awarded the Special Operation Medal for their operation on Sept 22, 2022. 

Manipur’s DGP among awardees

Director general of police (DGP) Rajiv Singh, currently in the CRPF, who was given the responsibility of chief of Manipur police during ethnic violence, was chosen for the home minister’s medal.

Another notable name includes senior IPS officer Amit Kumar, who has served in different capacities in Jammu and Kashmir and is currently posted in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

“The Narcotics Control Bureau’s (NCB) 14 officers and personnel have been awarded the medal for their operations from Nov 15, 2022 onwards while 12 personnel and officers of Andhra Pradesh police have been conferred with the award for their operation on Feb 21, 2023,” read the notification issued today.

Tamil Nadu police’s 19 officers and personnel have been awarded the Special Operation Medal for their operations on Dec 19 and 21 and Jan 22 and 23 while 16 officers and personnel of Jharkhand police have been awarded for their operations from Aug 18, 2022 to Feb 1, 2023. 

What is the Special Operation Medal?

The Special Operation Medal is conferred in areas such as counterterrorism, border action, arms control, prevention of narcotics smuggling, and rescue operations to encourage state and union territory police.

Since 2018, it has been announced every year on Oct 31 when it was constituted with the objective of recognising those operations that have a high degree of planning, high significance for the security of the country, state, or UT, and have a significant impact on the security of larger sections of society.
