197 murders in two years: Crime in Ahmedabad a rising concern

Ahmedabad is facing a noticeable rise in crime, raising concerns about the law and order situation in Gujarat’s largest metro city. Recent figures from the state Home Department show an increase in serious offences such as murder, robbery, theft, rape, molestation and kidnapping over the past two years.
According to the data, 197 murder cases have been reported in Ahmedabad in the last two years, with 2025 recording more cases compared to 2024. Incidents of robbery and theft have also increased. Around 183 robbery cases have been registered, while theft cases have crossed 7,000, indicating growing boldness among criminals.
Crimes against women remain a major concern. Police records show 267 molestation cases in two years, which averages to nearly 11 cases every month. Even more worrying are the 565 rape cases registered during the same period — more than 20 cases per month. These numbers challenge claims that the city is completely safe for women, especially at night.
Kidnapping cases have also added to the rising crime graph, with 402 incidents reported in two years. Additionally, 107 suicide cases were recorded during this period .
Police authorities state that 62,726 accused have been arrested and sent to jail, and 44,288 cases have been solved. However, 385 accused are still absconding.
With crime increasing across categories, Ahmedabad is emerging as a serious law and order challenge for the police.
