160 parents seek transfer of wards after killing of student at Seventh-Day School in Ahmedabad

In the aftermath of the shocking murder of a Class 10 student on the premises of Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) School in Khokhra, at least 160 parents have formally applied to withdraw their children, citing a complete loss of confidence in the institution’s ability to ensure safety.
Parents’ exodus amid public outrage
On Thursday, more than 250 parents gathered at the school to inquire about Leaving Certificate (LC) procedures. Of these, 160 completed formal withdrawal applications, while many others are awaiting processing. The District Education Officer’s (DEO) office has assured parents that the withdrawal process will remain open to accommodate further applications. Four DEO officials have been deputed to the school to assist with LC approvals and facilitate transfers to other institutions.
Incident that sparked the crisis
The unrest follows the fatal stabbing of a Class 10 student, a minor, by a Class 8 student near the school gate after a scuffle. CCTV footage later revealed lapses in the school’s response, with allegations that timely medical assistance was not provided. The victim succumbed to his injuries later that night, triggering widespread anger among parents and the community.
Management under scrutiny
The school management has come under severe criticism, with allegations of gross negligence in ensuring student safety. The principal and three teachers have been booked under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Juvenile Justice Act. The Crime Branch has also initiated inquiries into whether systemic negligence contributed to the tragedy.
Safety protocols under review
Amid growing demands for accountability, DEO Rohit Chaudhary convened a meeting with school heads and child safety experts. The proposed reforms include appointing class guardians, mandatory parental orientation programmes, and heightened supervision during dismissal hours. Officials emphasised that student safety protocols across private schools will be reviewed and strengthened.
Uncertain road ahead
While 160 families have formally initiated transfers, officials said arrangements are being made with neighbouring CBSE-affiliated schools to absorb affected students and ensure continuity of education. However, with SDA School catering to nearly 9,000 students, many parents remain caught in uncertainty, awaiting clarity on both safety assurances and structural reforms.
For now, parents continue to demand transparency, accountability, and sweeping reforms, warning that confidence in the institution cannot be restored without visible action.
