Once a popular choice for students in Gujarat, the MBA-MCA (Master of Business Administration and Master of Computer Applications) courses have gone abegging, with thousands of seats remaining vacant. Despite this situation, new colleges offering these courses are popping up.

Last year, 17 new colleges were started, and this year, 16 new colleges have been added. With this, there has been an increase of 1,780 seats, taking the total vacant seats to  over 27,000.

Against this, only 5,907 students feature in the merit list, showing a declining interest and registration for the said courses.

Considering this situation, more than 21,000 seats are likely to remain vacant. Of these, over 50% seats are likely to be filled in private colleges this year, without students appearing for the Common Management Admission Test (CMAT).

The Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) declared the merit list in the online central process for admission to MBA-MCA. This year, only 6,168 students were registered on the basis of CMAT. Of these, 5,907 students were included in the merit list, including 3,214 for MBA, 2,773 for MCA, and 119 candidates who opted for both courses. As many as  39 candidates are from outside the state.

A total of 261 students have not been included in the merit as they have not appeared for CMAT or have not cleared any other qualifying UG examination.

For MBA, students can apply for 425 seats in nine granted colleges and 7,730 seats in 119 private colleges. Of these, 12,696 seats belong to the ACPC Government Quota, and 5,459 seats are of Management Quota.

For MCA, students can apply for 90 seats in two government colleges, 220 seats in seven granted colleges, and 8,610 seats in 78 private colleges. Here, 6,567 seats belong to the government quota, and 2,043 seats are of management quota.

With this year’s approval, a total of 128 colleges offer MBA and 87 colleges offer MCA courses.
