15 deaths a day: Gujarat sees rapid rise in TB, ranks 5th among states with most cases

The prevalence of Tuberculosis in Gujarat has been on an alarming rise, with over 5,000 deaths reported annually from 2019 to June 2024. In just six months of 2024, 2,784 deaths due to Tuberculosis were registered, making it over 15 cases daily. According to government data, the highest number of deaths due to tuberculosis was reported in 2020 with 6,870 deaths.

From January to June 2024, a total of 73,211 cases have been reported in Gujarat, out of which 48,645 cases were registered at government hospitals and 24,566 in private hospitals. 

From 2019 to June 2024, a total of 5.05 lakh people have been diagnosed with TB.

In India, Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of TB cases this year with 3.44 lakh patients, followed by 1.14 lakh cases in Maharashtra. Bihar had the third-highest number of TB cases, with 1.01 lakh patients. Madhya Pradesh reported 92,892 cases of TB in 2024. Gujarat became the fifth state in the country with the highest number of registered tuberculosis cases, with 73,211 patients.
