‘14449’ to lodge complaints against police officially launched: Govt to HC
On dialling and reporting misconduct by police personnel, it will directly go to the control room of the director general of police (DGP)
People in Gujarat can now dial the ‘14449’ number to report and complain regarding any misconduct or extortion by police personnel. The number is now fully operational.
On dialling and reporting any unnecessary misconduct by police personnel, including the Traffic Regulation Brigade (TRB) jawans or any other police officers, it will directly go to the control room of the director general of police (DGP).
The government told the Gujarat High Court that the complaints will find the city’s police commissioner or district superintendent of police (SP) through an email. Swift action has been promised by the state regarding any complaints.
The DGP (Law and Order) will monitor the helpline number.
Spreading the word
In order to spread the helpline number to the citizens, the government has advertised this helpline number in public places, including courts, police stations, railway stations, airports, intersections, bus stations, etc.
Notably, this hearing was part of a suo motu case following a news report highlighting an incident where three policemen extorted ₹60,000 from a couple in Ahmedabad near the Ognaj toll booth on Aug 27, 2023.
Regarding this case, the government also told the court that a chargesheet has been filed against the accused in trial court and disciplinary action has been taken against the guilty police personnel.
Considering the state’s affidavit, the division bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Aniruddha Mayee expressed satisfaction and disposed of the suo motu PIL.
