118 workers hospitalised after drinking water laced with insecticide at Surat diamond firm

A total of 118 diamond workers in Surat were admitted to a hospital after drinking water from a water cooler.

The incident occurred at Anabh Gems in the Millennium Complex in Surat’s Kapodra area.

According to reports, an insecticide called Celphos, typically used to protect grains, was allegedly mixed into the drinking water filter system.

A torn plastic bag containing the insecticide was found floating in the cooler.

All affected workers were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. Six of them are currently under intensive care (ICU).

The police have registered a case under Section BNS 109(1) for attempted murder and have begun a detailed investigation. There were no CCTV cameras at the location of the water filter. It is suspected that someone familiar with the factory layout — likely a worker — committed this act. Therefore, the police, along with a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), are taking statements from all 118 affected workers and others present in the factory.

DCP Alok Kumar stated, “The Kapodra police have interrogated around four to five suspicious workers. Multiple teams have been formed, and investigations are ongoing. Based on the list of  workers from Anabh Gems, each person is being examined.”

“Dealers and sub-dealers associated with Anabh Gems are also being investigated. Three teams have been formed for this purpose. Around 50 statements have been recorded till now,” he added.
