Under the much-debated Citizenship Act, a total of 108 migrants from Pakistan were awarded Indian citizenship today by the district authorities.

The minister of state for home, Harsh Sanghvi, awarded citizenship to the beneficiaries at a programme organised in a hotel near the collector's office in collaboration with the Ahmedabad district collectorate.

At the programme, minister Sanghvi said, “It’s like Diwali among the families who got Indian citizenship today.”

Collector of Ahmedabad, Praveena D K; MLAs of Ahmedabad; the president and members of the Sindh Minority Migrants Association; and 108 beneficiaries with their families were present at the venue.

From the year 2017 until today, 1,149 such refugees living in Ahmedabad have been awarded Indian citizenship certificates by the Ahmedabad district collectorate.

Citizenship awarded earlier

Earlier in 2022, 107 Pakistani Hindus were reportedly given Indian citizenship by the Ahmedabad district collector.

The Gazette notifications of the years 2016 and 2018 empowered the district collectors of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Kutch in Gujarat to grant Indian citizenship to migrants from six communities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan after following the procedure under the Citizenship Act.

According to reports, similar orders were passed in 2016, 2018, and 2021, which allowed district magistrates in Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Punjab to grant citizenship certificates to migrants from minority communities (Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian) who entered India with valid documents.
